The Work/Life Balance: Don’t Have a Rubbish One (and some seriously sneaky peeks at what’s coming next…)

Tracey Smith, author of The Book of Rubbish Ideas and The Great British DownshiftSeasons Greetings to all,

It’s Christmas Eve and following a short trip to London, I’m now home in the bosom of my lovely family and preparing for a few days of non-work related fun!

For the past five months, with the kind assistance of dear Thomas, I’ve delivered a rubbish post-a-day to tantalise you, to tempt, to engage you with a bit of rubbish reduction and I’ve had some great evidence to show it’s worked.  But you can have too much a good thing you know 🙂 so I’m taking a firm grip of my work/life balance and signing off until the New Year to enjoy a break with the ones I love.

Have Yourself a Rubbish Little Christmas!

How about a little recycled vinyl in your Christmas stocking?
How about a little recycled vinyl in your Christmas stocking?

Oh boy.

I’ve relented.

It’s December and I’ve finally come around to the idea of thinking about Christmas.

It’s not that I don’t like it; on the contrary, Christmas time is great. I just cannot stomach all the hype and perpetual consumer pressure that seems to start bearing down on us from about mid-October.

Anyway, over the weekend I spent a little time hopping around in cyberspace seeking out a few inexpensive, minimal-rubbish flavoured things to add to Santa’s list and I thought I’d share my findings with you, my rubbish-loving chums!

Ban The Plastic Bag

ban-the-plastic-bagHi everybody, Thomas here. Are you a bit like me and are still dumbfounded by the sight of people carrying their shopping in plastic bags? That in this day and age, people are still using plastic bags despite being aware of the havoc they cause to the environment? I must confess, it is similar to the reaction I get when I see young people smoking. I just cannot understand why people persist in doing these things despite the tidal waves of information that say it is really not such a good idea.

I have actually confronted friends and family who still use plastic bags in order to get some kind of explanation out of them. The most common retort I get is that they reuse the bags as bin liners and therefore need to keep taking plastic bags to add to the massive collection that they already have at home. The idea of using paper bags as bin liners or buying biodegradable bin liners apparently hasn’t occurred to them yet.

Author Appearances (Get Me)…!

It’s just a shortie today for two reasons. Tuesday’s post about writing letters to the supermarkets has opened a floodgate and I have a mini-deluge to reply to, which is fantastic!

Oh just how much would I love this to hit the nationals? I’d need a full-time PA!

Also, I’ve been on the radio most of the day and I’m all talked out.

I broadcast a 3-hour show every Wednesday called ‘Slow Down and Green Up’ and there’s absolutely no prizes for guessing what that’s all about… After that, I did a few pre-recorded interviews and drank far too much coffee. Continue reading “Author Appearances (Get Me)…!”

Who are Alastair Sawday Publishing?

The lovely Sawdays eco-offices just outside of Bristol
The lovely Sawday's eco-offices just outside of Bristol

Hi everybody – this is Thomas and I thought I’d write today’s post to give Tracey a day off. I guess I’m what you would call the administrator/moderator of this blog but it is probably far more accurate to describe me as the guy who tweaks and fiddles with things and often stares at the screening muttering, “What have I done? Why has that right hand column vanished?”.

Anyway, I thought it would be a good idea to talk a bit on behalf of Alastair Sawday Publishing, as we are the folks publishing Tracey’s book. I don’t want this to come across as if we’re simply blowing our own trumpet as I think it will be of genuine interest to people who are interested in what Tracey’s is up to. You can be assured she’s being published by a company that walks the walk as well as talking the talk. Continue reading “Who are Alastair Sawday Publishing?”
