The Book of Rubbish Ideas positively celebrates reducing waste in your home and keeping more money in your pocket by being savvy with some of your shopping ideas.
Of course, cooking from fresh is a terrific way of combining both and I’ve been doing it for years. I started making simple recipe loaves and rolls when the children were born. I wanted to take more charge of what was going into the bellies of my babies and I soon realised, it was a very fulfilling process too.
But being a busy mother of three, I also realised I didn’t have much spare time to indulge either…who does!
So I started ‘tweaking’ the recipes and fiddling around with kneading methods too and I devised a way of reducing the time and effort needed to make it and a way to save pounds and pennies too by incorporating some of the usual kitchen leftovers in the recipes.
Don’t be alarmed, I’m not talking about chopped up chicken bones or anything, I mean stuff like the last few spoons from the pan that cooked up the breakfast porridge, or a grated carrot or courgette that has gone floppy and is past it’s best….these accessible ingredients added to a dough not only reduce the rubbish that might have ended up in the bin (or hopefully the compost), but they can significantly reduce the cost you’d have spent on the raw ingredients – it’s a win, win situation!

Good grief, it’s almost July and that means one thing…
The race is on for work-at-home parents up and down the country to crack their most important jobs out before the onset of the 6-week school holidays.
I’m not trying to make it sound like it’s a torturous event, on the contrary, it’s an honour and privilege to share the break with them (quite often something we only recognise after they no longer ‘need’ us) but I’m a firm believer in balance and there will be times when I rely on Spielberg and the electronic babysitter to give me a welcome rest.
I’m back in the saddle after spending 3 days up ‘in the smoke’ (that’s London to you missus) attending www.ukaware.com.
I was helping Dave Hampton (the Carbon Coach) to host the speaker panels that were on Friday and Saturday and sat on a panel too on Saturday afternoon.
It was an amazing event – Mr OOFFOO himself, Al Tepper, was there and I had very eco’nversations with the delightful Ruby Wax and the charmingly talented Oliver Heath too.
I could witter on about how much I loved the whole thing, but my calves still haven’t forgiven me! I must have walked 500 miles….
Instead, I thought I’d tell you about my personal favourites in attendance at the show.

Here’s another delicious filler to accompany them in salads, sandwiches and in thousands of other dishes; sprouting seeds and beans.
You’ll probably remember cultivating mustard cress at school; I do believe, along with trying to blow up your science lab by mixing exotic coloured bottles of liquid, growing cress was in fact compulsory by international law). It was fun, but it involved cotton wool, plastic boxes, water and patience. Sprouting is much easier and the results are more abundant.
Sprouting beans and seeds are one of the most nutritional forms of raw foods you can get and it’ll come as no surprise, I’m going to urge you to buy the organic versions of. Here’s how to make your mum feel special with a fruity home-made card and a very special breakfast in bed!
To celebrate the special event which takes place on Sunday the 22nd March, Tropical Wholefoods, pioneer of sun-dried tropical fruits, has come up with a delicious breakfast menu for mum, which can be announced with a home-made card made using dried fruit.
These unique designs include sun-dried pineapple, chewy banana chips and apricot kernels to form a smiley face. Another card uses the same dried fruits to make a colourful bunch of flowers.
I’ve been inspired by the ever-increasing number of readers I have of the other recipes here on the blog and I thought I’d post another of my favourites for you to play with.
It’s another bread recipe, fabulously simple and incredibly impressive!
The reason I love sharing my bread recipes with you, is because if you can make bread, you and your family will never go hungry.
This one’s also very inexpensive to make, particularly if you grow a few of the ingredients yourself, you can add lots of leftovers to it too (do go see my Fabulous Rubbish Flatbread recipe if you haven’t done so already) and it helps you realise that not all food comes from the shops; you ‘can’ be a little self-sufficient….ish…
